I mean, just take a look at the photo at the top of the page. Those scream “Scarlet and Gray” more than the current uniforms. Ohio State is also encouraging all fans to wear black to the game to set up a true “blackout” environment on Saturday night. Ohio State debuted the all-black uniforms in 2015 during a night game against Penn State. The Buckeyes didn’t wear them again until 2018 during a home game against Nebraska. Ohio State last wore the all-black uniform combination in 2019 during a game against Michigan State.
The all-scarlet ones weren’t so bad, but I hated the all-black ones. I think they should just stick to their typical home and away for the majority of the games. While these all-black uniforms are not the team’s standard home threads, they’re also not necessarily new. When the Buckeyes wear these uniforms on Saturday night, it will be the fourth time the school has worn them in a game. Ohio State will end the month of September with a blackout of Wisconsin on the 24th. Fans are encouraged to wear black, and the Buckeyes are expected to wear their black alternate uniforms for the first time since 2019.

Ohio State started its trend of one alternate uniform per season in 2009 for its regular season finale against Michigan with a look honored the 1954 national championship team. White jerseys, red numbers with gray trim, white helmets with black numbers. The only points I take off are because of the different number fonts between the jersey and helmet. Either keep the block numbers on the jersey and lose the helmet numbers or use the numbers from the 1942 throwbacks.

The start of November 2014 marked the return of Ohio State's home Pro Combat uniforms. Barrett and Cardale Jones each throwing two touchdown passes as the Buckeyes wasted the Fighting Illini. Nearly a month later, that win streak ballooned to 20 with a curb-stomping of the Nittany Lions. Miller accounted for five touchdowns and Carlos Hyde and Kenny Guiton each rushed for two apiece. The jerseys were accented with pink accessories as part of breast cancer awareness month. A monochrome of black with scarlet accents made for a nice clap back to Penn State’s “white-out”.

The 2012 and 2013 alternates were part of a uniform set that was worn eight times from 2012 to 2014. In 2012, Ohio State played Michigan at home and debuted the scarlet version that featured a chrome helmet, gray numbers and enlarged stripes on the helmet, jersey and pants. In 2013, Ohio State wore the away version, which used the same helmet and an all-white jersey and pants combination. However, there is a reason these 1961 throwbacks are towards the bottom of these Ohio State alternate uniforms rankings.

Then Barrett rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the extra sessions and Joey Bosa buried Christian Hackenberg to seal the victory. In 2016, Ohio State had to come from behind and force two overtimes to beat hated rival Michigan. I was also at this game and in the same endzone where Curtis Samuel sealed the deal. The Horseshoe was so loud that I could feel the wrinkles on my brain. When you add in the fact that the game played out as one of the all-time Buckeye classics, well that just adds to the beauty. At first we didn’t love this look, but we feel like it has aged well.

Lantry's kick appeared to go over or barely outside the left upright, and the officials called it wide left. Television replays of the kick were anything but conclusive, so Ohio State came away with the win. In the Buckeyes' primetime game against Wisconsin Sept. 24, Ohio State brought out its all-black alternate jerseys. The scarlet version of Ohio State's Sugar Bowl uniform came to fruition in the College Football Playoff National Championship.
The Buckeyes won The Game because of a Curtis Samuel walk-off touchdown from 15 yards after J.T. Barrett secured a first down on 4th-and-1 with a quarterback run. According to The Wolverine, Michigan wore the all-whites in every road game except one during the Harbaugh era until 2021, when the program began mixing up its uniform combinations. Since then, the Wolverines have worn white-on-white only twice on the road – last year at Nebraska and this year at Rutgers. Ohio State will make its fifth CFP appearance since college football replaced the BCS in 2014.

We'd love to have you part of the conversation during the season. Ohio State beat Wisconsin 52-21, earning its fourth win of the season and continued a nine-game win streak against the Badgers. The "Cocaine Whites" returned in force the weekend before Halloween 2014 when the Buckeyes paid a visit to Happy Valley. Ohio State jumped out to a 17-0 lead at halftime, only to see it evaporate as Penn State forced overtime.
This Saturday when the Ohio State Buckeyes take the field to play Michigan State, they won’t be wearing their traditional unis. From what we can tell the only change from their normal look as the road team, will be white pants instead of gray. That includes the four games mentioned above, as well as wins at Virginia Tech and Michigan in 2015, a win at Oklahoma in 2016 and loss to Penn State in 2016.
A theme of new threads against Michigan spilled into the 2010 season, once again honoring a national championship team. The look from the 1942 club roamed Ohio Stadium as the Buckeyes trounced Michigan in what was Rich Rodriguez' final appearance in the rivalry as head coach of the Wolverines. The Buckeyes own one of the most iconic uniforms in all of college football but are unafraid to divert from their regular look. It helps make the school more money on apparel and almost always gains the attention of high-profile recruits. If Ohio State would change its away jerseys to any of these, the most likely would be these Diamond Quest whites. Since debuting them against Alabama in the 2015 CFP Semi-Final, the Buckeyes have sported these threads an additional seven times.

In all, Ohio State is 14-3 since 2009 when wearing alternate uniforms. For additional effect, the team wore gray camouflage helmets to honor the military for the 2011 spring game. In the new world of college football, alternate uniforms are a sign of the times. There are hard-core traditionalists who will never accept anything but the original. At the other extreme, are those who would like a new combination each week, ala the Oregon Ducks. Ohio State and Nike seem to have met nicely in the middle offering one to two alternates per year.
From a 1954 national championship throwback in 2009 to a wolf-inspired away uniform in 2017, “The Game” has seen a wide variety of Ohio State uniforms in the last 13 years. The last instance of Michigan wearing its all-white uniforms was in 2018. From the Ohio State perspective, the Buckeyes’ first win against Michigan while it wore the all-white uniforms was in 1974. Ohio State won The Game, 12-10, after Wolverines kicker Mike Lantry missed a 33-yarder with 18 seconds left.

In order to be considered for this list, the Buckeyes would have to wear a jersey that is different than its primary scarlet or white jerseys. In the past 10 or so years, there have been 12 Ohio State alternate uniforms, each with its own history, fan pushback, and success. Please note that these are my opinions, considering ranking these things is subjective.
According to The Lantern's Reid Murray, director of football equipment services Kevin Ries said the team will wear gray sleeves during the CFP. The Buckeyes are called the Scarlet and Gray for a reason. They need to not just have the gray pants, they need some gray in the jersey too.

Fans will be treated that evening to a performance from the alumni marching band. The Buckeyes brought an all-white look against the Wolverines in 2013's win.
